Self Service
When interning in New York City for three months a few years ago, I came across Self Service magazine. I was working in fashion, and in the same building was a PR agency. This PR agency would discard of great fashion magazines they no longer wanted. I on the other hand, thoroughly enjoyed reading these magazines, as they were more expensive than I was accustomed to paying on a regular basis.
I brought one single magazine back home to Iowa of all of the magazines I collected while interning. This was the Fall/Winter 2002 issue of Self Service. Today Self Service is hard-bound, unlike the aforementioned issue, and is still one of the best periodicals that encapsulates equal parts fashion, art, celebrity, an amazing amount of good content, and attention to detail stylistically. This issue still stays with me each move I make. I salute Self Service magazine, may you always be worth your $25 cover price. (I just purchased the latest issue at a newsstand on Lafayette, charged me $35. American Apparel online has it for $25.)
